Down Home Charm….

Southern Gals Arts, is just as it says, two Southern born and raised ladies making and creating art that is inspired from their hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There are many influences from the city itself that makes it into their collections. Whether it’s NCSA’s annual performance of the Nutcracker Ballet that has Eliza painting giant versions of them for people’s front yards, Paula’s Moravian inspired bird feeders, or trips to local vineyards that add to their ever growing cork collections to craft from, Winston is in the forefront of everything they make.

A note from Paula

Hello, my name is Paula, and I am the mother in this mother/daughter duo. Growing up I was a painfully average student academically, but art has always been my passion. My mother used to say that if I didn’t have what I wanted to play with, I found a way to make it.

In high school I had a great teacher who exposed me to many types of arts and crafts, hoping to help me find my niche. Unfortunately, I never found it because I wanted to do it all. By the time I was ready for college I had designed and built a custom staircase for my parent’s country house, painted signs on tractor trailer trucks, and designed logos for some small businesses.

There was never a doubt that I would major in art in college. My freshman year I had a sculpture teacher who assigned a six foot sculpture made from found objects. I credit him with making me a self proclaimed pack rat. I seldom throw away anything because, “I could make something out of that.”

Throughout college I went from fine art to art & design to finally landing at North Carolina School of the Arts with a concentration in scene design. I always loved building things and then making them beautiful. All of this has brought me to this day where I finally gained the courage to go out on a limb and share what I love and the gifts I’ve been given. I credit my daughter, Eliza, with giving me assurance that we can do this!

Even if it took me 40 years to get to this point, I’m thrilled to share all of our quirky designs, and recycled arts and crafts. To celebrate the fact that our art doesn’t fit into any one mold! We make what we love and hope you’ll love it too!

A note from Eliza

Hello, my name is Eliza, and I am the daughter in this mother/daughter duo. As one would think, growing up with Paula as my mother, the creative apple does not fall very far from the tree. She taught me at a very young age how to mix colors and how to put things together to make the visions of what I see in my head.

Where her talent going up through school was in raw art, mine was more in the dramatic arts and music. I spent my young life not only on stage but also helping her build it so I’d have something to preform on. I shocked and amazed my 7th grade shop teacher at being able to operate drill presses and table saws safely without even having to be taught.

As I grew older my art form medium changed and I started to channel my grandfather more as I moved into the baking arena and used my artistic flare to bake rather than to paint or craft. Icing became my structure and food gels mixed with vodka became my watercolors.

Now as we embark on this new journey of changing this crafting passion into an actual business, I find myself as being more the little voice in my mother’s head going. “But what if we made this?”, “What if you moved that to here?”, or “I saw a tutorial about this once on YouTube, we could do that as well, but with this difference, or this spin to make it something truly unique and our own.”

Sometimes she has to reign me in and tell me “One at a time”, which is fine. I have an entire backlog of things to try and build and create. We have an entire lifetime ahead of us to try and make it all for you.
